You know how important it is to be diligent about brushing and flossing in order to fight off the bacteria that can lead to tooth decay and gum disease. But what about your tongue? It’s part of your mouth right, so that same bacteria can thrive on your tongue as well. Think of it this way, when you eat or drink something that changes the color of your teeth it also affects your tongue.
The surface of your tongue is not smooth it is grooved, with nooks and crannies that make perfect places for harmful bacteria to nestle. If the bacteria is not brushed away regularly it can build up and harden into tartar, just like on your teeth. You have a couple of options as to how to keep your tongue clean.
When you finish brushing your teeth but before you rinse your toothbrush start from the back and brush gently but thoroughly to the tip of your tongue. Hit the roof of your mouth and inside your cheeks before rinsing. Or, you could use a tongue scraper made specifically for cleaning the tongue and available in the oral care aisle of your favorite store. However you choose to do it the important thing is to remember to clean your tongue as a part of your daily regimen for oral care.
